Thanjavur, the 'Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu,' was the capital of the great Chola Empire and is a major center for South Indian art, architecture, and religion. The city is dominated by the magnificent Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of Chola architecture. The temple's vimana (tower) is one of the tallest in South India. Thanjavur is also famous for its unique Tanjore paintings, which are embellished with gold foil and semi-precious stones, and for the Thanjavur Maratha Palace, which houses a rich collection of art and artifacts.
