Mahabalipuram (or Mamallapuram) is a historic town and a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its 7th and 8th-century Hindu group of monuments. This ancient port city of the Pallava dynasty is known for its magnificent rock-cut temples, monolithic rathas (chariots), and giant open-air rock reliefs like 'Arjuna's Penance.' The iconic Shore Temple, overlooking the Bay of Bengal, is one of the oldest structural stone temples in South India. The town has a thriving stone-carving industry and a relaxed, bohemian vibe, attracting both history buffs and backpackers.
