Hemis Monastery is the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh, belonging to the Drukpa Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Tucked away in a hidden valley, the monastery is renowned for its rich collection of ancient relics, including a copper-gilt statue of Lord Buddha and numerous thangkas (painted scrolls). The monastery becomes a hub of activity during the annual Hemis Festival, held in honor of Guru Padmasambhava, which features colorful masked dances (Chhams) and a vibrant cultural celebration that attracts locals and tourists alike.
