Thekkady is the location of the famous Periyar National Park, one of India's most important wildlife sanctuaries. Centered around a large artificial lake created by the Mullaperiyar Dam, the park is renowned for its large herds of wild elephants. A boat safari on Periyar Lake is the most popular activity, offering a unique opportunity to spot elephants, bison, sambar deer, and a variety of bird species from the water. The sanctuary is also rich in biodiversity and is a treasure trove of tropical flora and fauna, set amidst a stunning landscape of moist deciduous forests.
