Sivasagar was the capital of the powerful Ahom dynasty, which ruled Assam for six centuries. The town is rich in historical and archaeological significance, with numerous monuments from the Ahom era. The most prominent feature is the Sivasagar Sivadol, a group of temples on the bank of a large man-made tank. The town is also home to Ahom palaces like the Talatal Ghar and Rang Ghar, the latter being one of the oldest surviving amphitheaters in Asia.
