Sarnath is one of the four most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world, located just a short distance from Varanasi. It is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, setting in motion the 'Wheel of Dharma.' The main attractions are the Dhamek Stupa, a massive stupa marking the spot of the first sermon, the Ashoka Pillar with its famous four-lion capital (the national emblem of India), and the ruins of ancient monasteries. The Sarnath Archaeological Museum houses a rich collection of Buddhist art and artifacts.
