Sanchi is a small village famous for its group of Buddhist monuments, including stupas, monasteries, and temples, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The most famous of these is the Great Stupa, originally commissioned by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. It is one of the oldest stone structures in India and an important monument of Indian architecture. The stupa is adorned with intricately carved gateways (toranas) that depict scenes from the life of the Buddha. Sanchi is a serene and important center for Buddhist pilgrimage and history.
