Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India and is famous for its phumdis, which are heterogeneous masses of vegetation, soil, and organic matter at various stages of decomposition that float on the lake's surface. These floating islands are a unique feature of the lake. The largest of these phumdis is home to the Keibul Lamjao National Park. The lake is a lifeline for the local communities, who live on the phumdis in floating huts and depend on the lake for their livelihood. It is a unique and ecologically important wetland.
